Walt Woerheide

Professor Emeritus of Investments

Walt Woerheide, PhD, MBA, ChFC®, RICP®, is Professor Emeritus of Investments at The American College of Financial Services.

Dr. Woerheide joined The College in 2001 as Professor of Investments. He served as vice president of academic affairs and dean for 12 years and held the Frank M. Engle Distinguished Chair in Economic Security Research from 2007-2018. He had primary responsibility for HS 328 (Investments) curriculum and later took responsibility for GS 811 (Investments). In addition, he contributed both written and video material to multiple other courses.

Before coming to The College, he served on the faculty at the University of Illinois at Chicago, the University of Michigan-Flint, and Rochester Institute of Technology.

Dr. Woerheide is the author of Introducing Personal FinanceThe Savings and Loan Industry: Current Problems and Possible Solutions, and has authored or co-authored seven editions of Fundamentals of Investments for Financial Planning for The College. 

He has published over 30 articles in leading journals, including the Journal of Financial PlanningJournal of Financial Service ProfessionalsFinancial Services ReviewFinancial Counseling and PlanningJournal of Consumer AffairsJournal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis, and the Journal of Finance

For several years, Dr. Woerheide served as co-editor with Wade Pfau of the Journal of Personal Finance. He continues to serve as a thought leader for several of these journals.

During his career, Dr. Woerheide provided substantial service to the professional associations. He served as president of both the Academy of Financial Services and the Midwest Finance Association, and for six years was the executive director of the Midwest Finance Association.

He earned a BA in Mathematical Economics from Brown University, and an MBA and PhD from Washington University in St. Louis. He holds the Chartered Financial Consultant (ChFC®), Retirement Income Certified Professional® (RICP®), and held the Certified Financial Planner® (CFP®) designation for twelve years.
